Success against Sussex!!

Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club was the venue for the match between Somerset Golf Captains and our friends from Sussex Golf Captains on Monday, the 31st of August 2021.

In match one, Stephen Butterfield and Rob Ford had a tremendous game which was a real birdie fest with Somerset edging it and winning by the margin of 2&1.

In match two, club captain Paul Burns played with Colin Davis. The Sussex players were really nice guys to play against and there was never more than one hole in the match. Paul played excellent golf which kept Somerset in touch. The course was in excellent condition, and Weston-Super-Mare were an excellent host club. Great company in the bar and the match was halved.

In match three, Colin Mantle and Mark Moorfoot enjoyed a very enjoyable game. Somerset played well but were well beaten by the margin of 6&5 by Nigel and David “Santa” Wilkin. We could say that Somerset were  “stuffed by Santa”.

In match four, David Andow and Ben Gliddon won by 2&1. After a fast start, the Somerset boys were two up but were then pegged back. But, after taking a second breath, Somerset took a small lead which they held to the end. This was a great game with great company and thoroughly enjoyable. Everyone is looking forward to meeting again next year.

In match five, Mike Rossiter and Tony Taylor halved their match against excellent opponents.

In match six, David Bate and Jeff Saunders won by the margin of 4&2. All four players agreed that the course was in excellent condition and the greens were superb. Everyone enjoyed each other’s company in a game that was played in a good spirit and with much appreciation.

In match seven, Keri Allchurch and Marcus Woodward halved their match which was a very close game with lots of pars and birdies. Never more than one hole in it either way. A half was a very fair result for a match played in a very good spirit with Dave and Micky from Sussex.

And in the final match Mike Usher-Clark played with Malcolm Head. In fact, one man from Sussex played against two men from Somerset and the one man from Sussex played and beat the course as well as Somerset. Somerset lost on the 14th when Craig was eight under gross to win by the margin of 5&4.  Lovely men and a pleasure to play with and to lose to them.

And so the overall result was Somerset 4 1/2 Sussex 3 1/2 and the trophy returned to Somerset!

We would like to thank match manager David Bate for his hard work and organisation
